After you have completed half a century of your life, you are likely to develop cataracts at any time. This is when you’ll experience a cloudy appearance on your eye lens, which will not let you see clearly the things in front of you. Other than that, you’ll experience symptoms like light sensitivity, dim colour appearance, and difficulty reading or watching television. You must immediately have your condition treated, or else you may be ready to also lose your vision! To be able to see clearly after having being hit by cataracts, the only form of treatment is surgery.
Before cataract surgery
Before cataract surgery, the doctor will carefully examine your eyes, and the size and location of your cataracts. Also, your overall health and medical conditions will be discussed so as to decide if you are a legitimate candidate for cataract surgery, because certain conditions and certain medications do not work well with cataracts. Once everything seems alright, the size of your eye and lens will also be measured so as to determine the right intraocular lens for your eyes.
During cataract surgery
Because of the local anesthetic given to your eyes before the surgery, you need rest assured as in spite of being awake, you won't feel any pain during the procedure. Using a state-of-the-art femtosecond laser, a tiny incision is made in the eye near the edge of the cornea, blending the cataract and the natural lens using ultrasound. Then, the emulsified material is removed through the incision, and the new intraocular lens is inserted in place. The entire procedure, although seeming to be very intricate, takes only around 15 minutes!
After cataract surgery
Once the new lens is placed in your eye, it becomes a permanent part of your eye, just like the natural lens, without having you to feel it differently. But, you’ll have much more improved vision, maybe even a better one than earlier with your natural lens! But, although the cataract surgery procedure takes only 15 minutes and provides you with better improved vision, but that doesn’t mean you’re ready to take up a regular lifestyle just instantly. Your eye will need some time to adjust to the new lens and heal completely. This is why you need to rest for a day or two and then get back to your doctor for a checkup, and only after he confirms your eyes to be normal, should you get back to your normal routine. Also, consider that your eyes may feel itchy or irritated for the first few days after surgery, so it’s absolutely normal if you feel the same. Taking the right medicines, eye drops, and other procedures that the doctor prescribes, you’ll recover completely with 3-4 weeks.
